What Is Copy Trading? A Complete Beginner’s Guide

If you are curious about the Forex market but do not have the time or experience to trade on your own, copy trading may have caught your eye. It lets you follow an experienced trader and have their trades copied into your own account automatically. This guide explains what copy trading is, how it works, what it can and cannot do, and how to get started carefully.

What is copy trading?

Copy trading is a way of investing where your trading account automatically copies the trades of another trader. The trader you copy is often called the Master (or signal provider), and you are the follower.

When the Master opens a trade, the same trade opens in your account. When the Master closes it, your trade closes too. The size of each copied trade depends on your settings and your account balance.

The most important point for beginners: your money stays in your own trading account with the broker. You do not send money to the Master. You simply connect your account to the Master’s strategy through the broker’s copy trading platform.

How does copy trading work?

Most copy trading platforms work in a similar way:

  1. The Master trades a real account. Their results are recorded on the platform and, ideally, verified by an independent service such as Myfxbook.
  2. You open an account with the same broker and choose a Master to follow.
  3. You choose your copy settings, such as how trade sizes are calculated and how much risk to take.
  4. Trades are copied automatically. You do not need to watch the charts all day, but you should check your account regularly.
  5. You can stop at any time by unsubscribing on the platform.

Key terms every beginner should know

  • Master: the trader whose trades are copied.
  • Follower: the person who copies the Master’s trades.
  • AutoScale: a copy mode that sizes your trades in proportion to your balance compared with the Master’s balance.
  • Ratio Multiplier: a setting that makes copied trades larger or smaller. 1.00 is the normal size, 0.50 is half, and 2.00 is double. A higher ratio means higher risk.
  • Drawdown: how far an account has fallen from its highest point. Maximum drawdown shows the deepest losing period so far.
  • Cent account: an account where the balance is shown in cents (100 cents = 1 USD). It lets beginners start with a smaller amount.

The benefits of copy trading

  • Beginner friendly: you can take part in the market without making every trading decision yourself.
  • Saves time: the Master watches the market and manages the trades.
  • Learn by watching: you can see how an experienced trader enters, manages and exits trades.
  • You stay in control: you choose the Master, set your own risk and can stop whenever you want.
  • Transparency: with verified records on Myfxbook, you can check a Master’s real history before you decide.

The risks you must understand

Copy trading is not a shortcut to guaranteed profit. Before you start, make sure you understand these risks:

  • You can lose money. If the Master loses, you lose too. Trading Forex and CFDs is high risk, and you may lose all of your invested capital.
  • Past performance does not guarantee future results. A strong track record can be followed by a losing period.
  • Your results may differ from the Master’s because of your balance, settings, start date, spreads, commissions, slippage and the broker’s execution.
  • Leverage increases risk. Small price moves can lead to large gains or losses.
  • Costs reduce returns. Platform fees, spreads, commissions and swaps all affect your final result.

How to choose a Master

Choosing who to follow is the most important decision you will make. Look at more than the total return:

  • Verified performance: prefer Masters whose results are verified on Myfxbook, so you can check the full record yourself.
  • Maximum drawdown: a high return with a very deep drawdown can be a warning sign. Ask yourself whether you could live with that drop.
  • Track record length: a few good weeks say little. A longer history gives a better picture.
  • A clear strategy: you should understand what the Master trades, their trading style and how they manage risk.
  • Consistency: steady results are often a better sign than a few very large wins.

On CopyTrade MT5, every Master portfolio shows its strategy, recommended copy settings and live statistics from Myfxbook, so you can compare them side by side.

How to get started, step by step

  1. Learn the basics in this guide and in our FAQ.
  2. Compare Masters on the Master Portfolios page. Check their drawdown, strategy and verified record.
  3. Decide your budget. Only use money you can afford to lose.
  4. Open an account with the Master’s broker through the official copy trading platform.
  5. Use conservative settings at first, for example a ratio of 1.00 or lower.
  6. Monitor your account regularly and review whether the results still match your goals.

Common beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a Master only because of a very high return.
  • Investing more than you can afford to lose.
  • Raising the ratio to try to earn faster.
  • Stopping and restarting after every losing trade.
  • Copying many Masters at once without checking your total risk.
  • Never checking your account after you start.

Is copy trading right for you?

Copy trading can suit beginners who want exposure to the Forex market, are willing to learn and accept that losses are part of trading. It is not suitable if you need guaranteed returns or cannot afford to lose the money you invest.
